Keyword Research, the best approach
Unlock the potential of your keywords: Are you making the best choices?
So, when it comes to SEO and getting your website ready to rank, pretty much everyone knows about keywords – that you need them, that you have to include them, and they’re what Search Engines will be searching for.
What types of keywords are there?
Let’s start with the most obvious, that would be your Primary Keywords, these are the ones that you’ve chosen because they best match your page content and inform your visitors about your brand, product, or services.
When you’re looking at ranking for specific keywords, it’s important to remember that it’s easier for pages to rank when they’re focused on a single topic, so having two to three reworded variations of a primary keyword will make this easier. It’s not generally advised to try for four or more, because there’s limited space in titles, tags, and meta descriptions – and you’re going to have a much harder job squeezing all that in.
Secondary keywords tend to be what’s also known as ‘long tailed keywords’, that means they’re generally three words or longer – these phrase keywords are the ones that don’t get as much traffic as the primary ones (which have been specifically chosen to be high ranking) but the traffic they do get is highly targeted – so for example, you might have a primary keyword of MOT Liverpool, but your long-tailed secondary keyword Cheap MOT Liverpool City Centre is attracting customers who aren’t just looking for an MOT in Liverpool, but one in the City Centre.
This attention to detail doesn’t stop there either, Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) Keywords take this a step further. Don’t let the fancy-pants sounding name confuse you, the concept is actually pretty simple – LSI Keywords are concepts that are related to the main keyword, and search engines generate results from topics or words that frequently appear together. So, let’s go back to our cars here for a moment, the primary keyword MOT Liverpool could be paired with LSI Keywords like cheap garage, automatic transmission, engine, road, tires, etc.
Why Is Keyword choice important then?
Getting your page seen and engaged with is a crucial part of your businesses SEO strategy – if people can’t find you, or don’t know you’re there, then they’re not going to spend with you after all.
Taking your keyword analysis and research to the next level, and making the smartest choices possible, is going to give you an advantage over others who might not have taken as much time or detailed care in getting their content optimised.
The devil is in the detail, and if you don’t take the time to really make your keyword choices matter, you’re going to be missing out on potential visitors, queries, and custom!
