Beginners guide to Mailchimp - By Rebecca HodsonMersey SEO

Mailchimp For Beginners-From A Beginner

Mailchimp can be a useful tool for any business, but it can also be quite confusing if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I have recently ventured into using Mailchimp and thought it would be useful to share my experience and top tips using Mailchimp for beginners!

Learn the basics before anything

Mailchimp allows you to really make it your own when creating a campaign for your subscribers, however don’t run before you can walk!

Mailchimp - so confusing

You need to learn the basics before you can start getting creative.

So, here are a few steps you need to go through when you are using Mailchimp for beginners:

Step 1 – Lists

After doing the obvious of creating an account, you need to create your first list.

A list is something that you can add your potential subscribers to, allowing you to target specific campaigns to your desired audience.

**MY TOP TIP #1**

You can gain subscribers by inviting people to your list by adding a signup form to your website.

Mailchimp lists

An example of this could be if you have a discount code specifically catered to your new customers you can create a list of your new customers only!

Step 2 – Campaigns

After you have your lists sorted, you are ready to create your first campaign which is the confusing part, especially if you are using Mailchimp for beginners.

You can make a campaign for either an email, ad or a landing page.

Mailchimp - I just don't get it

When creating your first campaign in Mailchimp you need to do the following things:

  • Pick your target audience from your lists.
  • Include a name that your subscribers will recognise (eg) Company name.
  • Think of an eye catching subject and preview text, so your subscribers click on your campaign!
  • DESIGN. More about that below…

Step 3 – Design

Now is the time to be creative!

With Mailchimp for beginners, especially, it is important to be short and sweet with your designs as you need to grab the reader before their attention is diverted to something else.

How to work Mailchimp

**MY TOP TIP #2**

You should never ever ‘cross your heart and hope to die’ use Google images for your campaigns as they can look quite unprofessional, plus you’ll likely get a letter from the owner of the image asking you to stop using it.

For more a more in depth step by step guide watch this video on Youtube that actually helped me when I used Mailchimp for the first time!

Instead use things like Canva or Photoshop to create a design around your campaign idea so, everything on it looks crisp and well designed, which is important (again) to grab your audience’s attention.

Rebecca’s Recap..

Mailchimp can be used very effectively to help your business grow, but you can also make your business seem unprofessional and ‘scam like’ if used for the wrong reasons.
